"In today's turbulent, restless and uncertain times, we urgently need concrete action to ensure peace. Each of us has a duty to respond, including by promoting understanding, respect and justice in our daily lives," emphasised Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, on today's International Day of Peace, inviting us to "Act Now for a Peaceful World".

Minister Fajon is calling on the entire international community, and those with the greatest responsibility, to take action for peace. She will highlight this on numerous occasions during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week. Slovenia is acting in a decisive, principled and responsible manner, particularly in its capacity as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

"We can all contribute to building a more peaceful world, even through small actions in our own communities. I believe that all our efforts are connected and that we can change the world through good deeds," said Minister Fajon, adding that we must stand up against unacceptable violence, human rights violations, hatred, discrimination and injustice, and speak out and fight, especially for the most vulnerable in our societies who are most affected by wars and conflicts.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Peace in 1981, and two decades later, in 2001, it unanimously voted to declare this day a period of non-violence and ceasefire. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace by the United Nations General Assembly.
