Statement from New York City Council Spokesperson on Mayor Adams’ Vetoes of Bills to Establish Minimum Pay Standards and Protections for Grocery Delivery Workers

Introduction 1135-A and Introduction 1133-A were passed by Council with veto-proof majority to provide grocery delivery workers with similar protections as food delivery app workforce

In response to Mayor Adams vetoing Introduction 1135-A and Introduction 1133-A, blocking grocery delivery workers with companies like Instacart and Amazon from receiving similar wage and workplace protections as food delivery workers (veto message here), the New York City Council issued the following statement from a spokesperson, Julia Agos:

"Mayor Adams is once again displaying hypocrisy - this time, by opposing common-sense minimum pay standards and protections for grocery delivery workers that his own administration negotiated with us to match existing ones for food delivery workers. This veto demonstrates that the mayor's claims to care about working-class New Yorkers and a sustainable delivery industry for New York City are hollow, because he is undermining the workers who make the sector possible. Without fair wages and protections for delivery workers, there is no sustainable industry, just exploitation. It's disappointing but unsurprising that the mayor is once again prioritizing corporate interests over New Yorkers and parroting inaccurate talking points to justify his actions that hurt working-class people. This Council will always stand up for workers in our city, and we will be considering our next steps."
