Piedmont CI offender dies in apparent suicide

David Whittington (#1475686) died today, the result of an apparent suicide. Whittington was found unresponsive Jan. 14 in his cell at Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury. He had been hospitalized since then.

David Whittington (#1475686) died today, the result of an apparent suicide.

Whittington was found unresponsive Jan. 14 in his cell at Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury. He had been hospitalized since then.

Local law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating, as is required in these circumstances. The N.C. Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully and conducting its own investigation.

Whittington, 25, was convicted in McDowell County and was serving a sentence for assault on a law officer and revocation of his post-release supervision. His projected release date was in September 2025.
