Former Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, whose tenure at the helm was part of nearly two decades of city leadership, will be the guest speaker during Grand Valley State University's April Commencement.
Bliss will offer remarks during the ceremony on April 25 at Van Andel Arena, the first of three ceremonies that weekend celebrating 3,238 Grand Valley graduates. Earlier that day, the Board of Trustees will consider approving an honorary degree to be presented to Bliss during the ceremony.
Bliss served as Grand Rapids mayor for nine years through 2024, leaving office after reaching term limits for the position. Before that, she served 10 years on the Grand Rapids City Commission. She also has served as a faculty member in GVSU's School of Social Work and Frederik Meijer Honors College.
"I am deeply honored to join Grand Valley State University as a speaker for the upcoming Commencement ceremony," Bliss said. "GVSU is a valuable partner and asset in our region and state, and its commitment to education, leadership and service not only strengthens our city but also empowers students to create a lasting impact.
"It is a privilege to be a part of this exciting milestone as graduates celebrate their accomplishments and step into the next chapter of their lives with confidence and purpose."
The work Bliss did leading Grand Rapids much of this century and her wide-ranging community involvement is part of a professional path characterized by public service and advocacy. Bliss has been recognized locally and statewide not only for her community leadership but also for her commitment and dedication in the field of child abuse and neglect.
She currently serves on the boards of the Downtown Development Authority, Kent County Convention Arena Authority, Community Rebuilders, ArtPrize and Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, adding to a host of previous local and state board memberships. She earned her bachelor's degrees in psychology and criminal justice from the University of South Alabama and a master's degree in social work from Michigan State University.
Grand Valley will hold the Friday Commencement ceremony at 7 p.m., with Saturday ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., all at Van Andel Arena. For more information about the ceremonies, visit the Grand Valley Commencement page .
