NATCA Members Complete First-Ever Comprehensive Legislative Activism Training Class

NATCA activists gathered in Washington, D.C., from Jan. 19-22 for the inaugural session of the Comprehensive Legislative Activism Training (CLAT). This new NATCA Academy course merges the previous courses for Legislative Activism Training (LAT) and Advanced Legislative Activism Training (ALAT). It provides a streamlined, four-day curriculum designed to prepare members for advocacy at both the local and national levels.

The training took place at the NATCA National Office and on Capitol Hill. Instructors - National Legislative Committee (NLC) Vice Chair Allison Schwaegel (St. Louis ATCT, STL), NLC Southwest Region Representative Corey Soignet (Houston Intercontinental ATCT, IAH), and Paul Behan (Jacksonville Center, ZJX) - guided 22 member activists through the complexities of Congress and NATCA's legislative advocacy. The coursework emphasized the role of the member activist as the most critical tier of our Union's grassroots efforts.

On Jan. 21, the class transitioned from the classroom to Capitol Hill. Members navigated the U.S. House and Senate office buildings to gain firsthand experience in direct advocacy.

"Training the next generation of NATCA legislative activists to engage in substantive conversations with lawmakers makes a difference for the future of our Union and profession," Schwaegel said. "We are excited to see how this new combined training format empowers our activists to strengthen NATCA's voice in their communities and in Washington."
