Transportation Producer Price Index – August 2026

Today, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported that the transportation equipment Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 2.6% from August 2025 to August 2026. The PPI, produced and published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), measures inflation from the perspective of the producers (sellers) of products.

Over the same 12-month period, the change in the PPI for transportation services varied by mode:

  • Air: +7.6%
  • Rail: +1.4%
  • Truck: +14.3%
  • Water: +16.7%
  • Arrangement of freight and cargo: +2.2%

In comparison, all services (transportation and non-transportation) rose 5.1% over the same timeframe.

Transportation contributed 15.6% to the overall increase in the PPI for all services.
