Stevenson’s Director of Library Services Tim Bottorff Competes on Scrabble Game Show Tonight

Tim Bottorff, Stevenson University's Director of Library Services, will be competing on The CW network's game show Scrabble tonight at 8:00 p.m.

Tim was kind enough to open up about his lifelong love of words and share the experiences that lead to him being featured on the game show.

How long have you been playing Scrabble?

My family always played Scrabble around the kitchen table at holidays and other gatherings. My grandfather in particular was a word buff, a fierce competitor, and a strong influence, so Scrabble was a part of my life from a very young age. And I have always loved words, dictionaries, and etymology, to the point that I even wrote a word-a-day email column when I was in college. Later I read Stefan Fatsis' amazing book Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble, which motivated me to learn more about and join that community.

How long have you been a competitive Scrabble player?

I started playing competitively about twenty years ago, in 2005. I visited a local Scrabble club, and I was immediately hooked on the fun, weird, and nerdy environment of competitive Scrabble. Since then, I've played regularly at clubs and online, competed in dozens of tournaments-including in the National Championship several times-and I've attained an expert-level rating, placing me among the best players in North America.

How did you get chosen to compete on the show?

I saw a casting call to be on the Scrabble TV game show, and I knew I had to apply. I submitted an application and completed an interview and a mock game with a casting agent, but I figured I probably would not be selected for some reason or another. But, before I knew it, I was being flown to London to be on the show!

What was your experience taping the show?

Appearing on the show was both exciting and terrifying! I knew I would be good at actually playing the game, but it was a pressure-filled environment, with the cameras, the producers, the host, the audience, the bright lights, and all the other trappings of a live set. Ultimately, it was a wonderful experience, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity!

The host, Craig Ferguson, is a hoot, and it was great working with all of the producers and crew of the show. I encourage everyone to watch the show - on the CW channel, the CW website, or the CW website!
