Washington, DC - U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann (TN-03) voted on January 7, 2025, to pass H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, which passed the House of Representatives with a bipartisan 264-159 vote. The Laken Riley Actamends federal law to require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to issue detainers and take custody of illegal aliens who commit theft-related crimes, such as shoplifting, as defined by state and local law. The bill also allows state attorneys general to sue the Secretary of Homeland Security for injunctive relief if immigration actions such as parole, violation of detention requirements, or other policy failures harm that state or its citizens.
"I applaud my colleagues for their strong bipartisan support of the Laken Riley Act. Ensuring that police and law enforcement have the tools to detain and deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes should never be a partisan issue. The American People have made it clear that they want illegal immigration ended and criminal illegal aliens deported before they can commit serious crimes. The Laken Riley Actis an important first step to getting our nation's illegal immigration crisis under control and ending the scourge of illegal immigrant crime. I urge the Senate to act quickly to pass this essential bill so President Trump can sign it into law as soon as he takes office on January 20."
