Reed Calls on Trump to End War in Iran

WASHINGTON, DC - In recent days, President Trump has issued contradictory statements on Iran, from declaring Iran has "agreed to everything," including working with the U.S. to remove its enriched uranium, to warning that if Iran does not sign a U.S. proposed deal, the "whole country is getting blown up."

Nearly two months into President Trump's war of choice - and hours after the president announced an indefinite ceasefire extension in response to Iran's negotiating demands - the U.S. Senate will vote on a fifth War Powers Resolution to end the president's war in Iran.

U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement calling on the Trump Administration to end this unauthorized war:

"President Trump launched this irresponsible war without any coherent strategy and against the will of the American people. It is long past time to end this operation and pursue a diplomatic strategy that actually stands a chance of making America more secure.

"The president has thrown the Middle East and the world into chaos, harmed our national security, and weakened America's economy. He has created a disaster that could take years to unwind. Every day this war drags on, President Trump is placing a heavier financial burden on U.S. taxpayers and forcing them to pay escalating prices for fuel, food, and more.

"Despite warnings from his advisers and lessons from history, President Trump refused to recognize that military action is meaningless unless it is matched by a robust diplomatic strategy to win the peace. Now it is apparent to everyone that President Trump is not in control of this conflict.

"I again urge Republicans to join Democrats in exercising real, necessary oversight of this misguided campaign. My colleagues should demand accountability and straightforward answers to simple questions about the costs and objectives of President Trump's war in Iran before it is too late to achieve a peaceful outcome."

Under the War Powers Act of 1973, the President must end military operations after 60 days unless Congress authorizes the use of force. The law provides for the potential of a one-time, 30-day extension if the President certifies that additional time is a military necessity needed to safely withdraw troops.
