Hundreds of residents from across East Tampa will gather Saturday, May 9 to celebrate the completion of the Fair Oaks Recreation Complex with a community-wide "Party in the Park."
The free celebration starts at 10 a.m., and will feature live entertainment, food, family friendly activities, athletic demonstrations, and opportunities for residents to explore the new recreation complex and outdoor amenities.
A transformative, multi-year investment in East Tampa, the new 10.25-acre public space creates expanded access to health, wellness, recreation, and community resources.
The regional complex features upgrades to the Herbert D. Carrington Sr. Community Lake, a splash pad with interactive features, ADA-accessible playground elements, athletic courts, food truck alley, covered event pavilion, picnic shelters, and expanded green space.
Phase 1 of the project, which opened in December 2025, introduced a 33,055-square-foot recreation center built on the former site of the Penny Saver Grocery Store. The facility includes a dedicated space for older active adults, along with a full-size basketball court, gym, computer lab, music production studio, and classroom spaces designed for residents of all ages.
"This project reflects what's possible when we listen to our community and follow through," said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.
"From a dilapidated facility to a modern recreation center and full park experience, Fair Oaks is now a stunning landmark where residents can gather, stay active, and build community for generations to come."
The City partnered with Skanska for both the design and construction of the $34 million project, which also reflects the City's commitment to economic opportunity through a targeted goal of 30% small local business participation.
"This facility will serve as a hub for families from more than a dozen surrounding neighborhoods while also creating meaningful opportunities for the community," said Ted Fowler, Director of Parks & Recreation.
"I can't wait to see kids discovering new passions, teens gaining confidence through their first summer jobs, and families simply enjoying time together in a space built with them in mind and supported by a team of employees who truly care about the community."
