Defendant Sentenced for Shooting Murder at Rancho Cordova House Party

The Honorable Ernest Sawtelle sentenced Amyis Coogler to 40 years to life in prison. On March 19, 2026, Coogler was convicted by a jury of the second-degree murder of Corey Shearer. The jury also found true an allegation that Coogler personally discharged a firearm causing death.

On August 5, 2022, Sacramento sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting at a house party and found the victim on the lawn with four gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Witnesses provided a description of the shooter who had fled the scene. Video footage showed Coogler hiding in a neighbor's backyard soon after the murder. DNA collected from evidence matched Coogler, including a firearm that was determined to be used in the shooting.
