WVU releases annual Clery Act report

Reflecting the dedication and diligence of the West Virginia University Police Department to keeping the campus community safe, the latest Clery Act report is now available.

"Our officers, dispatchers, and emergency support staff serve our University community with pride and principle," Chief Sherry St. Clair said.

"Many people may not be fully aware of the extent of the work we do each day and night, but we are embedded in the University community, and committed to ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors."

A summary of crime and fire safety for the WVU Morgantown Campus, Health Sciences - Eastern Division, Health Sciences - Charleston Division, and School of Nursing - Bridgeport Campus, the annual Clery Act report covers the number of reported crimes, as defined in the federal Clery Act, but not investigation outcomes.

For added context, one murder/nonnegligent manslaughter was reported. This involved a drug overdose resulting in the death of an individual not affiliated with the University that was handled by the Morgantown Police Department at the intersection of Patteson Drive and Monongahela Boulevard.

Reported rapes declined from 20 in 2024 to 12 in 2025. Domestic violence, stalking, and motor vehicle thefts remained relatively consistent with the previous year.

Burglaries increased from 25 in 2024 to 28 in 2025. However, one reported incident accounted for six statistics since one property with five occupied bedrooms was unlawfully entered.

Under the Stop Campus Hazing Act - an amendment to the Clery Act - hazing is now a Clery-reportable crime. Included in the report are three hazing incidents that involved student organizations.

As in previous years, the report includes crime statistics provided by outside police agencies statewide that have jurisdiction over Clery geography which, in addition to on-campus locations, includes public property within or immediately adjacent to campus, and in or on noncampus buildings or property that WVU owns or controls.
