53rd Avenue Widening Project Progresses to Third Stage on Wednesday, September 3 August 29, 2025 - Beginning Wednesday, September 3, 2025, work progresses to the third stage of the 53rd Avenue Widening Project from Devils Glen Road east to Middle Road as crews fill in gaps and widen the roadway from two lanes to four lanes. This is the final stage of this project. For information on the first and second stages, please see our earlier press releases below. During the third stage, work will move north and the north lanes of 53rd Avenue will be widened from the Crow Creek Bridge to Addyson Drive. This stage is expected to last approximately six weeks, weather permitting. To ensure the safety of the traveling public and the construction workers on site, traffic on 53rd Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in each direction to maintain two-way traffic from Devils Glen Road to Middle Road for the duration of the project. However, large trucks, buses, and semi-tractor trailers will be detoured to Tanglefoot Lane during this time. Throughout the entire construction period, the City will be updating this news page, the road construction website, and the City's Facebook Page, Nextdoor Account, and sending out texts and/or emails to users who opt into the following Alert Iowa Lists: Road Closures, Road Construction, and Traffic Notifications. August 6, 2025 - Beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025, work progresses to the second stage of the 53rd Avenue Widening Project from Devils Glen Road east to Middle Road as crews fill in gaps and widen the roadway from two lanes to four lanes. July 11, 2025 - Beginning Monday, July 14, 2025, work begins on 53rd Avenue from Devils Glen Road east to Middle Road to fill in gaps and widen the roadway from two lanes to four lanes. This project will be done in three stages. During the first stage, the south lanes of 53rd Avenue will be widened from the access drive to The Summit of Bettendorf (4699 53rd Avenue) east to Middle Road. This stage is expected to last approximately four weeks, weather permitting. During the second stage, work will move slightly west and the south lanes of 53rd Avenue will be widened from Slate Creek Drive to the access drive to The Summit of Bettendorf. This stage is expected to last approximately six weeks, weather permitting. During the third stage, the remaining roadway work will be completed. Additionally, a five-foot-wide sidewalk will be constructed filling in remaining gaps on the south side of 53rd Avenue to connect walkers, runners, and bicyclists from Devils Glen Road to Middle Road. This stage is expected to last approximately six weeks, weather permitting.
