Alachua County Senior Volunteer Programs Join Nationwide AmeriCorps Celebration

On Sept. 15, 2026, Alachua County's AmeriCorps Seniors programs - the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) - joined communities nationwide in celebrating the impact of older adult volunteers and recognizing their contributions to local communities.

Alachua County volunteers marked the occasion with a luncheon, cake, a guest speaker and participation in a nationwide Zoom celebration connecting AmeriCorps Seniors programs and volunteers across the country.

Through FGP and RSVP, local volunteers use their time, skills and life experiences to support children, families, older adults and community organizations throughout Alachua County.

The Foster Grandparent Program connects older adult volunteers with children and youth who benefit from additional mentorship, encouragement, educational support and positive relationships. Foster Grandparents serve as caring role models, providing one-on-one attention and helping young people build confidence and develop important life skills.

"Foster Grandparents have a special ability to bring patience, encouragement, and life experience to the children they serve," said April Francis, manager of the Foster Grandparent Program. "Their commitment creates meaningful relationships that can have a lasting impact on a child's growth and development. We are proud to celebrate the difference our volunteers make each day."

RSVP engages older adults in meaningful volunteer opportunities that address community needs. Volunteers contribute their talents through initiatives focused on health and wellness, social connection, digital literacy, community support and other local priorities.

"RSVP demonstrates that the experience, knowledge, and talents of older adults remain a tremendous community resource," said Olajuwon White, director of Veteran Services and interim RSVP Program manager. "Our volunteers are not simply giving their time; they are using a lifetime of experience to address real community needs, build connections, and improve the quality of life for others."

Alachua County encourages adults age 55 and older who are interested in giving back to explore volunteer opportunities.
