STEM BEST® Program award applications open today, Sept. 1. Iowa schools are invited to apply for funding that supports work-based and career-connected learning experiences for students across the state. Applications are being accepted for both new and returning schools in IowaGrants through Nov. 3.
The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council's STEM BEST® Program awards up to $50,000 with a 2:1 required match to K-12 public and accredited nonpublic schools in Iowa to build long-lasting school and business partnerships through authentic learning experiences. Teachers and industry professionals work side-by-side to craft curriculum and projects that help students develop high-demand skills and expose them to pathways of opportunity, homing in on interests and potential career opportunities.
Once awarded, there is a 17-month window for planning and implementation in which award funds can be used in a variety of ways including facility upgrades, purchasing industry-grade equipment, acquiring additional space, time for program planning with partners, travel needs for exploration, integrating curriculum into existing courses, aligning learning with workplace needs and related professional development for either teachers, students or community partners.
"Iowa schools are continually looking to build authentic learning experiences for their students and Iowa businesses want to connect with the local schools that are preparing their future employees," said Tanya Hunt, STEM BEST® Program coordinator at the Iowa Department of Education. "The skills honed and partnerships forged through participation in the STEM BEST® Program help prepare Iowa's students for the fast-paced, technology-driven world they enter upon high school graduation. STEM BEST® is truly a partnership and a win for everyone involved."
Becoming a STEM BEST® model unlocks additional opportunities such as the Enhancement award to upgrade or improve upon a school's existing model. The STEM BEST® Explore award is the program's summer extension to craft work-based learning experiences for students. Partners with STEM BEST® models also gain access to a growing statewide network of supportive counterparts across Iowa along with opportunities to collaborate including the annual statewide BEST STEM-posium.
Those considering applying and looking for ideas or inspiration are invited to join Hunt and experienced STEM BEST® Program educator partners for a virtual Idea Lab on Sept. 2. This come-and-go virtual workshop will allow attendees to connect with those who have successfully developed innovative work-based learning experiences, learn tips and tricks to make the application process go smoothly, brainstorm partnerships, ask questions and leave with practical feedback and inspiration.
