Sordoni Art Gallery Presents Of Place and Passage: Actions and Images from Sept. 1 to Oct. 18

Photography holds a moment still. Choreography lets movement unfold. At first, the two might seem like completely different art forms. But for Stephan Koplowitz, they are closely connected.

While best known as a choreographer, Koplowitz has used photography heavily throughout his career. His exhibition, Of Place and Passage: Actions and Images, explores the relationship between movement, people and the spaces around them.

The exhibition will be on display at the Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University from Sept. 1 to Oct. 18.

"At the Sordoni Art Gallery, we are always looking for ways to connect people with visual art through perspectives they may not have previously considered," says Heather Sincavage, gallery director. "Dance is certainly a visual medium, and this exhibition gives us an opportunity to explore the ways Koplowitz toggles between movement and photography. I'm particularly excited for visitors to see how interconnected those practices are."

Through photography, video, installation and archival materials, Koplowitz's work shows how choreography can extend beyond the traditional stage. Incorporating architecture, landscapes and public spaces into his work, Koplowitz invites audiences to look at their surroundings in new ways and recognize choreography within the environments they encounter every day.

"You don't need to know anything about contemporary art, photography or dance to find an entry point into this exhibition," says Sincavage. "Koplowitz's work begins with something we all experience: moving through spaces and noticing how those spaces shape what we see and how we behave. I think visitors may come in expecting an exhibition about either photography or dance and leave thinking differently about both. That kind of discovery is exactly what we hope happens at the Sordoni."

The exhibition will be accompanied by several events throughout the fall.

An Art in Context Lecture with Koplowitz will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, followed by a reception. Registration is appreciated: wilkes.edu/sordoniartgallery.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, from noon to 2 p.m., families can attend Artventurers: Fragmentations, a hands-on program for kids in connection to the exhibition.

As part of Homecoming weekend, an Alumni Exhibition Tour will take place on Friday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. Registration is required: wilkes.edu/homecoming.

The exhibition's programming will conclude on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 5:15 p.m. with an Art in Context Screening of PINA. Space is limited, and registration is required: wilkes.edu/sordoniartgallery.
