FBI Director To Graham: We Need Logan's Law

WASHINGTON - During today's hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) questioned Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel on Graham's legislation to create a Violent Criminal Offender Database, known as Logan's Law.

Graham introduced Logan's Law in response to the murder of Logan Federico at the hands of a violent repeat offender in Columbia, South Carolina. The bill seeks to shine a light on judges and prosecutors who fail to adequately hold criminals accountable.

  • GRAHAM : "Director Patel, when it comes to systems, do you think the country would be well-served to have a law like I'm proposing called Logan's Law, that would require states to report to the Attorney General of the United States the results of all cases involving violent crime…to include the charge and the plea bargain, so we would know better about soft-on-crime prosecutors and judges?"
  • DIRECTOR PATEL : "That bill is critical to providing the information that we at the FBI house at our criminal justice information center - CJIS property - in West Virginia. We are only as good as the data we are given. We don't go out and proactively and legally obtain that data from our partner enforcement agencies around the country."
  • GRAHAM : "So you would support Logan's Law, requiring that to be done?"
  • DIRECTOR PATEL: "Absolutely, we need it."
  • GRAHAM : "Yeah, I think so too." https://youtu.be/FTDDMyrs4nw?si=n7p9JFHb7D85AhDk&t=146

The actions of soft-on-crime judges and prosecutors directly affect Americans across the country. This week, a career criminal in Massachusetts fired 50 to 60 rounds while walking down a busy Massachusetts road. The perpetrator hit two innocent bystanders, leaving them in critical condition, and traded gunfire with both a police officer and a former Marine.

  • GRAHAM : "The man, who in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who shot at a bunch of drivers, he had a long criminal record. Are you familiar with that?"
  • DIRECTOR PATEL: "Yes, sir."
  • GRAHAM : "As a matter of fact, while he was on probation, he shot at police officers and not much happened. Are you familiar with that?"
  • DIRECTOR PATEL: "Yes, sir."
  • GRAHAM : "Do you agree that we need to break the cycle of catch-and-release and looking the other way when it comes to violent crime in this country?"
  • DIRECTOR PATEL: "I think catch-and-release is the number one cause of recidivist violent crime in the history of the United States of America." https://youtu.be/FTDDMyrs4nw?si=ex8aFQh_118h78Gl&t=202
