Congresswoman Simon Introduces the “Day of Silence' Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Vice Chair of the Equality Caucus Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) joined Chair of the Equality Caucus Congressman Mark Takano (D-CA-41) and Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) to introduce the "Day of Silence" resolution. This resolution calls for equal education opportunities, basic civil rights protections, and freedom from erasure for all students, particularly LGBTQ+ young people in K-12 schools.

"Every child deserves the chance to safely be their most authentic self at school. Schools should open doors, not close them," said Vice Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus Lateefah Simon. "As Republicans escalate their dangerous attacks on the LGBTQ+ community at the federal and state level, it is more important than ever that we join together to assure that all students are protected against discrimination and to reaffirm their basic civil rights. Our Day of Silence resolution recognizes the bullying and harassment that LGBTQ+ youth may face and demands equal opportunity and basic civil rights in all public schools. I thank Equality Caucus Chair Takano and Senator Schatz for their partnership to ensure that all school children can fully participate in their education, extracurriculars, and their future."

Congresswoman Simon previously introduced this resolution in Congress last year. This resolution is supported by Glisten (formerly GLSEN), a national LGBTQ+ advocacy group, and coincides with Glisten's National Day of Silence, a day of advocacy on April 10, 2026, to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ+ people in schools. You can find the full text of the resolution here.

Congresswoman Simon is committed to defending, protecting, and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community in Congress. In Congress, she has co-led a letter opposing President Donald Trump's renaming of the USNS Harvey Milk, led a letter to the Department of Housing and Urban Development opposing rollbacks anti-discrimination enforcement of the Fair Housing Act for LGBTQ+ Americans, and consistently spoken out against Republican attacks to health and civil rights protections for the LGBTQ+ community, including attempts to ban data collection on gender identity at the Department of Defense, and supported efforts to protect health care access for transgender youth.
