Tremont Man Pleads Guilty to Several Motor Vehicle Violations After Crash in Acadia National Park

Gregory Harper crashed his truck and fled the scene

BANGOR, Maine: A Tremont man pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Bangor to failing to report a motor vehicle accident, failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle, and carrying or storing an open container of alcohol inside a vehicle.

According to court records, in August 2025, Gregory Harper, 42, crashed his pickup truck into a tree on the Seal Cove Road in Acadia National Park and fled the scene. A witness called 911 and reported the accident. Harper was not present when National Park Service rangers arrived, but he turned himself in two days later. During a search of his truck, rangers located open alcohol cans. When interviewed, Harper said he swerved to avoid a deer.

Harper faces up to six months in prison, a maximum fine of $5,000, and up to five years of probation on each count. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigative report by the U.S. Probation Office. A U.S. Magistrate Judge will determine any sentence after considering statutory sentencing factors.

The National Park Service investigated the case with assistance from the Southwest Harbor Police Department.
