Media Invitation: Marion County to Bless Safe Haven Baby Box at MCFR Citra Station

Saving lives just got a little easier in Marion County, as the newest Safe Haven Baby Box will be blessed at 11 am. on Monday, Sept. 29, at Marion County Fire Rescue Citra Fire Station #2, located at 2189 NE 180th Lane, Citra. This event is made possible with the support of the Marion County Board of County Commissioners, whose commitment has been instrumental in bringing this life-saving resource to the community. This is the second Safe Haven Baby Box installed at Marion County Fire Rescue stations. Across the nation, there are now 380 Safe Haven Baby Box locations, including 8 now in the state of Florida.

The media is invited to join us at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, to raise awareness of this lifesaving resource, which provides a vital lifeline for mothers in need and offers a safe start for their newborns.

Founded by Monica Kelsey with the mission to end infant abandonment, Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a safe, anonymous option for parents in crisis. Once a newborn is placed inside, the exterior door automatically locks, alerting fire rescue personnel to immediately retrieve the baby and ensure prompt care and protection. In addition to the baby boxes, Safe Haven also offers a confidential national hotline at 1-866-99BABY1 for those in need of support.

Nineteen states have a Baby Box presence within their state. Kelsey shared, "We have seen time and time again that preparation can save and change lives. We never know when or where we will be needed, so it is crucial to have options for mothers in crisis. I am grateful for local advocates who take our mission to their community."

Since 2017, 69 infants have been safely and legally surrendered in a Baby Box. The national Safe Haven crisis line has assisted with over 160 handoff surrenders. Each year the numbers increase with more baby boxes available across the country. Surrendered infants are adopted by families who have registered as foster to adopt. The local department of family services coordinates the adoption process.
