October 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week

October 5-11, 2025, is Fire Prevention Week. This year the campaign is, "Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home"

Lithium-ion batteries power many of our everyday devices - phones, tablets, tools, toys, and more. But when used improperly, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

The three key things to remember are:

Buy Only Listed Products

  • Look for the label from nationally recognized testing lab (like UL)
  • Avoid cheap or off-brand products that don't meet safety standards - especially online

Charge Devices Safely

  • Use the original charging cable and follow the manufacturer's instructions
  • Charge on a hard surface, never on beds, couches, or under pillows
  • Avoid overcharging - unplug or remove the battery once it is fully charged
  • Replace damaged or worn chargers with approved replacements only

Dispose/recycle batteries responsibly

  • Never toss lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling - they can catch fire
  • Find a certified recycling location at: www.call2recycle.org

Visit www.fpw.org to find information and educational resources and for more safety tips.
