CU Concert Band and Lawton Community Band to present contemporary, global selections

Cameron University music students will be joined by community members for a concert featuring the CU Concert Band and the Cameron/Lawton Community Band, both under the direction of Dr. Andrey Cruz. The concert is set for Sunday, October 13, in the University Theatre at 4 p.m.

Tickets purchased at the door are $10 for adult and $8 for senior citizens, members of the military, and non-CU students. Cameron University students, faculty and staff receive one free admission with their CU I.D. Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 580-581-2346. The CU Concert Band will open with "Rippling Watercolors," an expressive lyrical work by Brian Balmages that explores extensive colors, harmonies, and emotional ranges, followed by Frank Ticheli's arrangement of "Amazing Grace." Two additional pieces will follow: "Four Scottish Dances" by Malcolm Arnold, composed in 1957 and inspired by Scottish country folk tunes and dances; and the U.S. premiere of "EBEÁNỌ̀" by Innocent Okechukwu, a prolific Nigerian composer whose style fuses indigenous music with Western elements.

The Cameron University/Lawton Community Band will kick off its portion of the program with Howard Hanson's "Triumphal Ode," a recently discovered piece written circa 1918 and considered to be the first symphonic wind band piece by an American composer. Next up will be "Irish Tune From County Derry" by Percy Grainger, a composition dedicated to the memory of Edvard Grieg. Prior to closing with John Phillip Sousa's "Esprits de Corp," the ensemble will present the U.S. premier of "Un Viaje al Sur," by Francisco Jose Rosal Nadales, a contemporary researcher, composer and director from Spain.

"The program was designed with a dual purpose: to develop the specific musical skills of the students and to introduce fresh, global perspectives to both the performers and the audience," Cruz says. "Each piece was chosen to enhance the musical growth of our students. Additionally, we are proud to feature works by contemporary composers from around the world, giving them a platform while exposing our musicians to new sounds and textures. Band repertoire is evolving on a global scale, and my goal is to bring that innovation to our students and the wider community. By showcasing this forward-thinking repertoire, Cameron University continues to broaden its musical horizons and offer unique experiences to both its students and the community."
