Student researchers in grades 5-12 from schools across Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Williams and Wood counties will present independent research projects and compete for top ratings and awards at Regional Science Day on Saturday, March 14, at The University of Toledo.

As a top-tier U.S. research institution with a Carnegie R1 classification, UToledo is proud to once again partner with the Ohio Academy of Science (OAS) to host the budding scientists from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thompson Student Union, 2965 W. Centennial Dr.

The event's schedule:

• From 8 to 9 a.m.: Registration for students and judges, students will set up projects;

• From 9 a.m to noon: Judging (no parents or visitors are permitted in the display area at this time);

• From noon to 1 p.m.: Student lunch (on your own); projects on display for public viewing; and

• From 1 to 2 p.m.: Awards ceremony.

Regional Science Day is governed by the Junior Academy Council of the Ohio Academy of Science, a nonprofit organization dedicated to stimulating interest in the sciences, promoting research, improving science instruction and recognizing high achievement.

This year's event at UToledo is organized by the UToledo RSD Council, chaired by Dr. Marc Seigar, dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at The University of Toledo. Each project will be evaluated by a team of two judges following Ohio Academy of Science standards. Students who earn a superior rating from the judges will advance to compete at the State Science Day Fair.

Regional Science Day represents the culmination of months of dedicated work by student researchers. Through their projects, participants develop critical thinking, scientific inquiry and communication skills as they learn research methodology and data collection skills, along with developing the ability to draw conclusions and present findings. The experience fosters creativity, independent thinking and a passion for science, while giving students the chance to connect with peers who share their enthusiasm for discovery.

Regional Science Day is free and open to the public.
