Rep. McBride Announces Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings as Guest for State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Sarah McBride (DE-AL) announced that Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings will join as her guest at tomorrow's State of the Union address, highlighting their shared focus on affordability and accountability for Delaware families.

As Attorney General, Jennings has been consistent in judicial challenges to the Trump administration for reckless actions that have driven up costs and undermined the rule of law. Since President Trump's inauguration in 2025, her office has filed nearly 50 lawsuits against the federal government-preserving $865 million in federal funding for Delaware and protecting consumers, health care access, and critical services.

"Delaware families deserve leaders who will stand up to the cruelty of this Administration, fight to lower costs and uphold the rule of law," said Rep. McBride. "As Attorney General, Kathy Jennings has led our state's efforts to challenge unlawful actions in court-filing nearly 50 cases and preserving just under $1 billion for Delaware taxpayers. I'm proud to have her join me at the State of the Union as we continue working to hold powerful interests accountable and put Delaware families first."

Jennings was sworn in as Delaware's 46th Attorney General in 2019. She has led efforts to strengthen consumer protections, defend civil rights, combat gun violence, and hold corporations and federal agencies accountable in court. A Wilmington native and career prosecutor, Jennings has served the Delaware Department of Justice in multiple leadership roles, including State Prosecutor and Chief Deputy Attorney General.

"I've taken an oath to defend the rule of law and protect the people of Delaware-and that's exactly what we've done," said Attorney General Jennings."When federal actions threaten our health care, drive up costs, or put critical funding at risk, we will go to court to stand up for Delaware families. I'm honored to join Congresswoman McBride at the State of the Union as we continue the work of holding powerful interests accountable and ensuring our state gets what it is owed."

Rep. McBride's invitation underscores the importance of defending Delaware's interests in the face of policies that raise everyday costs and threaten critical federal funding. At this year's State of the Union, McBride and Jennings' presence intends to send a clear message that they are committed to bringing the perspective of Delawareans to every space, and their determination to continue pressing for solutions that lower costs for working families and ensure accountability at every level of government.

Below is Attorney General Jennings' official bio:

Attorney General Kathy Jennings was sworn in on January 1, 2019 and serves as Delaware's 46th Attorney General. As Attorney General she has presided over historic reductions in gun violence and recidivism; championed landmark gun safety, criminal justice, consumer safety, anti-corruption, and community policing policies; and established the DOJ's Division of Civil Rights & Public Trust and its Office of Impact Litigation. She has led the Department of Justice through successful litigation in dozens of cases ranging from federal accountability to abortion rights to industrial pollution to the opioid epidemic. Since President Trump's inauguration in 2025, AG Jennings has gone to Court nearly 50 times to defend the rule of law, preserving just under $1 billion in federal funds to Delaware in the process.

Born and raised in Wilmington, Kathy graduated from Mount Pleasant High School, University of Delaware, and Villanova University Law School, before joining the Delaware Department of Justice. She prosecuted scores of domestic violence, sexual assault and homicide cases, including Delaware's first and only known serial killer. This case marked the first time that DNA analysis was admitted into evidence in a Delaware Court.

After years of service, Kathy was named Delaware State Prosecutor and later went on to serve as Chief Deputy Attorney General for the Delaware Department of Justice. While serving as Chief Deputy Attorney General, Kathy worked to create the Consumer Fraud Division, giving consumers strong protections against fraud and abuse.

Kathy returned to the Delaware Department of Justice in 2011 to serve as State Prosecutor under Attorney General Beau Biden and later under Attorney General Matt Denn. Under their leadership, Kathy successfully sought legislation to end mandatory life sentences for people convicted of drug crimes and to restore driving privileges for people with drug convictions to enable them to work. During her tenure, Kathy worked with others to form the Crime Strategies Unit, whose focus is to engage with communities hardest hit by violent crime and blight to solve problems and restore trust. In 2019, Kathy turned the Crime Strategies Unit into the Community Engagement Unit. Kathy also worked with police chiefs to formulate Delaware's model policy for police worn body cameras and secure funds to provide the lifesaving drug Narcan to police agencies statewide.
