JUNEAU, Alaska - January's statewide job count was up by 200, or 0.1 percent, from January 2025.

The transportation, warehousing and utilities sector added 900 jobs, followed by private education and health care (800 jobs) and manufacturing (700).

Industries with job losses included professional and business services (-300) and information (-200).

Government job losses nearly canceled out private sector gains. Federal employment was 2,000 jobs below January 2025, reflecting the year's deep cuts. State government was down by 400 jobs, with losses in general government and the University of Alaska. Local government, which includes public schools, was flat.

Alaska's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in January and the U.S rate was 4.3 percent.
