Sunset High School P-TECH alum starts career two years after graduation

Editor's note: Spanish story included below

DALLAS - Just two years after graduating from Sunset High School, Sarai Lopez-Castillo already has two college degrees, a full-time career with Dallas ISD, and another degree underway.

Her accelerated path started at Sunset High School, where the Pathways in Technology Early College High School program allowed her to earn an associate degree alongside her high school diploma.

Today, Sarai has returned to Dallas ISD as a marketing communications coordinator in the Bond department while pursuing a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

"I heard about the opportunity to get a college degree while in high school, and I'm the type of person to always take chances if they're offered to me," she said. "I knew it was going to benefit me in the future, and I've always been about my future."

For as long as she can remember, propelling herself and taking on every task possible has been the norm. Sarai is the first person in her family to attend and graduate from college, a feat her parents have spent years wishing for her.

"I have drive and motivation because of my parents," she said. "I've always looked up to them, they're the most hardworking people I know. I try to be the best version of myself for them so that their sacrifices weren't for nothing. Showing my little brother that he's capable of anything is an inspiration for me too."

As a marketing communications coordinator, Sarai puts the skills she gained in Sunset's Pathways in Technology program and Dallas ISD Communication Services internship to use.

"I remember picking out my outfits for the internship and feeling really excited to be in an office setting, and communications in a broader aspect," she said. "It gave me reassurance of the field that I wanted to go into because reading a description is different from seeing how it's applied. The internship made me want to study my field more and taught me the impact it has on people, and how fun it can be."

Throughout her four high school years, succeeding in college courses and graduating with an associate degree taught her how to study for exams, manage time, and be confident in interviews. By the time her post-high-school-graduation internship concluded, Sarai was confident to pursue a bachelor's degree in advertising and brand strategy at the University of North Texas.

Knowing she only had two years to soak everything in at UNT, Sarai graduated with a wealth of knowledge. She gained leadership and networking skills as a member of Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc. served as social media chair for two campus departments, and was promoted from account manager to vice president of UNT's in-house ad agency, SWOOP.

Looking back from her new office space on the eighth floor, and pursuing a Master's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing, Sarai is excited to continue learning and growing as a professional. Her advice to others is to take chances and figure it out along the way, because if it were easy, everybody would be doing it. Think about the outcome and how much a new opportunity can benefit you in the end, she says.

"Everywhere I went, I was asked what I was going to do next. At the time, waiting for a job offer, I ended up pursuing a master's degree," she said. "For a lot of my family, they don't have the opportunity to just go get a master's or a bachelor's. My success is like our family's roots blooming to do something bigger; in a way, that's how I see it. Watching their faces light up and making them proud makes me feel like I'm doing something right."
