Agriculture Minister Outlines Government Initiatives to Strengthen Food Security

The climate crisis continues to pose serious challenges for the Caribbean, and agriculture remains one of the most vulnerable sectors. With the threat of natural disasters, ensuring food security is a critical national priority.

During the 50th Sir Winston Scott Memorial Lecture, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Indar Weir shared an update on several initiatives Government has implemented to build resilience and modernise the agricultural landscape.

Among the major programmes highlighted was the Farmers Empowerment and Enfranchisement Drive (FEED). This was created to attract more young people to the agricultural sector. According to Minister Weir, the initiative engaged over 1,400 participants.

The Minister also outlined the Community Agriculture and Response for Empowerment (Project CARE), which encourages households to participate in food production. Through the use of backyard farming systems such as aquaponics, families are supported in growing their own food and contributing to national food security efforts.

In addition, Government has established greenhouses across several secondary schools, giving students first-hand experience in producing food. "[We] would have these greenhouses set up so that children can get the feel and understanding for what it is like to grow food in a controlled environment using various growing systems."

In addition, he highlighted the introduction of vertical farming, particularly for leafy greens and herbs. The Minister reported reduced growth cycles through this method and emphasised the need for greater private-sector participation. Vertical farming systems, he added, will serve as important training tools as Barbados continues to adopt innovative technology.

These initiatives represent Government's current approach to strengthening the agricultural sector, improving climate resilience, and supporting national food security amid ongoing environmental challenges.
