Determination of nickel-specific Scope 3 GHG emissions

General publications

Feb 24 - 2026

The measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions should be done in a consistent way to ensure coherence and comparability of results between industry sectors, companies, and their specific products. This can be achieved through the application of globally agreed standards. However because they are developed for a wide range of stakeholder groups, these standards fail to give clear guidance on sectors with their specific characteristics, such as metals production, and more specifically, the production of nickel.

We prepared a guidance to provide interested stakeholders (e.g., nickel producers) with clear and harmonised rules on the calculation of scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions in the nickel industry. The focus of the work is on those Scope 3 GHG emission categories that are specific to the characteristics of the nickel industry with its production patterns, first and end use as well as recycling.
