IWD 2026: ABU Members Champion Rights, Justice and Action for Women

Across the Asia-Pacific and beyond, members of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) marked International Women's Day 2026 with meaningful programmes and initiatives that highlighted the voices, resilience, and achievements of women. Celebrated under the global theme "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls," this year's observance called for concrete steps to dismantle discriminatory laws, strengthen protections, and ensure that women and girls can fully exercise their rights.

The theme underscores a global reality: despite progress, women worldwide still hold only about 64% of the legal rights afforded to men, highlighting the continued need for action and advocacy.

Addressing Women's Health in Mongolia

In Mongolia, MNB World contributed to the global conversation by highlighting health challenges faced by women, particularly digestive system disorders, which remain common among women in the country. Through its informative programme, the broadcaster aimed to raise awareness about women's health issues and encourage more open discussions on prevention, treatment, and wellbeing. By bringing medical professionals and public health perspectives to the forefront, the programme reinforced the importance of accessible healthcare and informed communities in improving women's quality of life.

Celebrating Strength and Solidarity in India

Meanwhile in India, Doordarshan Archives commemorated International Women's Day with a special programme titled "Celebrating Strength Through Give to Gain." The initiative highlighted the contributions of women across different sectors and communities, showcasing stories of perseverance, leadership, and empowerment. The programme served as a reminder that women's progress is built not only on individual success but also on collective support, mentorship, and solidarity.

A Global Moment of Reflection and Action

International Women's Day remains a powerful moment for reflection and mobilisation worldwide. The 2026 theme emphasises that recognising women's rights alone is not enough-justice must be accessible, and action must follow to dismantle systemic barriers that continue to affect women and girls globally.

Through programmes that inform, celebrate, and advocate, ABU members continue to play an important role in shaping public conversations around gender equality. By highlighting issues ranging from women's health to empowerment and representation, broadcasters across the ABU network are not only telling women's stories-they are amplifying their voices and advancing the call for meaningful change. As the world marks International Women's Day 2026, their collective efforts serve as a reminder that achieving rights, justice, and action for all women and girls requires continued commitment, collaboration, and the power of media to inspire progress.
