Scott Bessent Denies Consumers & Businesses Are Paying For Trump’s Trade Policies Despite Overwhelming Evidence They’re Footing The Bill Arrow

Two new polls today signal Americans deeply disapprove of Trump's handling of inflation and the rising cost of living

Today on Meet the Press, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent repeatedly denied that Americans are footing the bill for Donald Trump's tariffs despite overwhelming evidence American companies and consumers are paying higher prices due to Trump's chaotic trade policies.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

"Scott Bessent: blink twice. Does Bessent even believe the lies he's peddling to Americans? Families are paying more and more for everything - from monthly utility bills to school supplies to groceries, and businesses are forecasting they're going to raise prices even more because of Trump's tariffs. Job opportunities are becoming scarce. Layoffs are increasing. The cost of living has skyrocketed, and there's no relief in sight. Trump has sold out the American people - and they know it."

Two new national polls out this morning reveal Americans deeply disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy. In the NBC News poll, 61% of voters surveyed disapprove of Trump's handling of inflation and the cost of living, which was identified as the top economic matter. According to the CBS News poll, 59% of voters disapproved of Trump's handling of the economy and 64% disapproved of his handling of inflation.

On top of inflation and high prices for basic necessities, job opportunities are getting harder and harder to find. In August, the U.S. economy added only 22,000 jobs - well below expectations. The US now has more unemployed people than job openings. The official "hiring rate" in the US is just 3.3% - nearly the lowest level since 2013.
