YORKVILLE, IL - State Representative Jed Davis expressed deep concern over Aurora's mayor raising flags to full staff before the conclusion of Governor JB Pritzker's official half-staff order, which remained in effect through sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
"The Governor's half-staff directive was clear and carries the force of state law under the Illinois Flag Display Act," Rep. Davis said. "Moving flags to full staff before sunset violated this order and undercut the purpose of this solemn tribute."
Rep. Davis emphasized the half-staff order was intended to honor victims of political violence and said the decision to ignore it disrespected both the law and the people the order was meant to remember.
"The Governor's half-staff order isn't a suggestion-it's the law," Rep. Davis continued. "By ordering Aurora's flags raised in open defiance, the mayor has chosen ego over duty and politics over the solemn respect owed this weekend. It is an unacceptable breach of both law and public trust, and Aurora deserves better."
Rep. Davis also expressed gratitude to the Aurora firefighters who brought the situation to his attention. "These men and women showed courage and respect by ensuring their station's flag remained at half-staff for part of the day. Their actions remind us what true public service looks like."
The Illinois Flag Display Act (5 ILCS 465) requires all public bodies, including municipalities, to keep flags at half-staff for the period specified by the Governor.
