Bringing Reddit to More People Around the World – Machine Learning-Powered Localization and Translation Launching in More than 35 New Countries

Earlier this year, we introduced a new machine translation feature to redditors in France, and to continue to bring Reddit to even more people around the world, today we're starting to roll out machine translation to redditors in more than 35 additional countries. Redditors in Brazil and Spain can now click the translate icon in the overflow menu in the top right corner of our apps to translate their entire Reddit feed-including posts and comments-into new language options.

People can also participate in conversations and contribute to communities in their own language.

In the coming weeks, we'll roll this out to Germany, Italy, the Philippines, and countries throughout Latin America. This feature will work wherever you access Reddit: across mobile web, our apps, and desktop.

Here's how it works:

  • Redditors can translate posts and comments from a community's original language to their Reddit set language. For example, someone in Spain who typically uses Reddit in Spanish can follow and contribute to French-language discussions.

  • People can post and comment in their preferred language, which will be auto-translated into the community's native language.

  • In the coming weeks, a banner will indicate translated posts, with options to show the original language. Translation options will be available via post-overflow menus.

Currently, translations can be seen by clicking the translate icon in the overflow menu in the top right corner of a page

We're also making it easier for people to find Reddit content and communities in their own languages off of Reddit through search engines. As machine translation continues to roll out, people will see translated Reddit content in search results.
