Gitanas Nausėda, together with the leaders of the Nordic-Baltic countries and Ukraine, issued a joint statement marking four years of Russia’s war against Ukraine

President Gitanas Nausėda, together with the leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight countries (NB8) and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, issued a joint statement.

In their joint statement, the leaders unequivocally condemn Russia's aggression and call on Russia to end its illegal invasion and agree to a ceasefire immediately.

The countries reaffirm their steadfast commitment to Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The joint statement underlines that a just and lasting peace must be firmly rooted in international law; it cannot legitimize the change of borders by use of force or leave Ukraine vulnerable to renewed military threats. The leaders stress that Ukraine continues to demonstrate willingness to negotiate peace whereas Russia continues to stall for time.

NB8 countries highlight that credible and legally binding security guarantees for Ukraine are essential to deter further aggression and ensure enduring stability across Europe.

The joint statement underscores that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war of aggression, the NB8 has provided more than 42 billion EUR in military, financial and humanitarian support. The support remains strategic, long-term and unwavering, and is one of the biggest among Ukraine's partners.

For 2026, the leaders plan military support amounting close to 12.5 billion EUR, as well as to ensure multi-year funding for Ukraine and deepen defense cooperation, including through joint co-production with the use of relevant European financial instruments.

The NB8 countries also commit to provide support to ensure the delivery of energy supplies and to protect and restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure, amounting to at least 918 million EUR for this winter and the rest of the year, while condemning the attacks by Russia against civilians and energy infrastructure of Ukraine.

The leaders commit to continue supporting Ukraine's recovery efforts and contribute to its long-term reconstruction and modernization, as well as to contribute to the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2027.

The leaders underline that they will actively seek to hold Russia accountable for its violations of international law, including through the development of international compensation mechanism and the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

The joint statement also underlines support for Ukraine in its irreversible path to full integration into the EU and NATO, noting that a strong, independent, and democratic Ukraine is vital for the security of the Euro-Atlantic area.
