Author to address SC State at Fall Convocation Sept. 17

U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Ret.) James J. Scott is a 1993 SC State graduate

U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Ret.) James J. Scott, a 1993 graduate of SC State, will deliver the convocation address.

SC State will ceremonially launch its academic year Thursday with a charge to the Class of 2030 under the theme, "New Beginnings, Endless Possibilities."

The occasion serves as the traditional launch of the academic year and reaffirms SC State's commitment to excellence, service, and scholarship for the university's newest students.

Scott spent 27 years in the U.S. Army and devoted more than 39 years to military and federal service. Most recently, he served as a senior security officer supporting cyber operations at Fort Meade, Maryland.

He is also an author and mentor. His inspirational memoir, "Changing Faces," shares his personal journey of overcoming childhood tragedy, adversity, and difficult circumstances through faith, perseverance, and education.

Scott is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Delta Chapter. He has been married to Yolanda for 32 years. They are the parents of three children: James Jr., Joshua and Trinity.

Dr. Louis Whitesides, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at SC State, will preside over the convocation. SC State President Alexander Conyers and SC State Board Chairman Douglas Gantt will also deliver remarks during the ceremony.

The program will include performances by the SC State Concert Wind Ensemble, a parade of university teams and student organizations, and recognition of the 2026 Freshman Scholarship recipients.
