July 2026 Visitor Spending Arrivals Increased

For Immediate Release: August 27, 2026

HONOLULU-Total spending by visitors in July 2026 was $1.99 billion (measured in nominal dollars), a 1.7 percent increase from July 2025, according to preliminary statistics from the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT). There were 883,248 total visitors in July 2026, up 1.1 percent from July 2025 (873,430 visitors). Visitors who came in July 2026 spent more on an average daily basis ($296 per person, +17.1%) than a year ago.

There were more total visitors in July 2026, however their average length of stay was shorter at 7.59 days, compared to 8.83 days (-14.1%) in July 2025. The statewide average daily census¹ in July 2026 was 216,319 visitors compared to 248,918 visitors (-13.1%) in July 2025.

In July 2026, 487,506 visitors arrived from the U.S. West, a 2.0 percent growth from July 2025 (477,933 visitors). In July 2026, total spending by U.S. West visitors was $998.6 million, the average daily spending was $285 per person and the average length of stay was 7.18 days. In July 2025, U.S. West visitors recorded total spending of $942.0 million, the average daily spending was $233 per person and the average length of stay was 8.47 days.

In July 2026, there were 230,589 visitors from the U.S. East, a 4.0 percent growth from July 2025 (221,641 visitors). In July 2026, total spending by U.S. East visitors was $629.8 million, the average daily spending was $338 per person and the average length of stay was 8.09 days. In July 2025, U.S. East visitors recorded total spending of $622.2 million, the average daily spending was $292 per person and the average length of stay was 9.60 days.

In July 2026, 55,630 visitors arrived from Japan, a slight increase (+0.4%) from July 2025 (55,399 visitors). In July 2026, total spending by Japanese visitors was $82.2 million, the average daily spending was $245 per person and the average length of stay was 6.04 days. In July 2025, Japanese visitors recorded total spending of $81.3 million, the average daily spending was $244 per person and the average length of stay was 6.02 days.

In July 2026, 19,782 visitors arrived from Canada, a 2.7 percent growth from July 2025 (19,260 visitors). In July 2026, total spending by Canadian visitors was $48.5 million, the average daily spending was $232 per person and the average length of stay was 10.55 days. In July 2025, Canadian visitors recorded total spending of $48.3 million, the average daily spending was $231 per person and the average length of stay was 10.85 days.

There were 87,749 visitors from all other international markets in July 2026, which included visitors from Oceania, Other Asia, Europe, Latin America, Guam, the Philippines, the Pacific Islands and other countries. In comparison, there were 96,562 visitors (-9.1%) from all other international markets in July 2025.

Air capacity to Hawaii in July 2026 (5,745 transpacific flights with 1,233,505 seats) increased compared to July 2025 (5,314 flights, +8.1% with 1,162,101 seats, +6.1%).

Year-to-Date 2026

A total of 5,921,068 visitors arrived in the first seven months of 2026, which was an increase of 2.3 percent from 5,790,537 visitors in the first seven months of 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, total visitor spending was $13.63 billion, up from $12.91 billion (+5.6%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Other Highlights

U.S. West: In July 2026, 385,285 visitors arrived from the Pacific region and 102,115 visitors came from the Mountain region. Eight out of 10 U.S. West visitors in July 2026 had been to Hawaii before (83.1%), while 16.9 percent were first-time visitors. In terms of accommodations, 54.2 percent of U.S. West visitors in July 2026 stayed in hotels, 15.0 percent stayed in condominiums, 12.5 percent stayed in timeshares, 12.3 percent stayed in rental homes and 10.3 percent stayed with friends and relatives.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 3,062,871 visitors from the U.S. West, compared to 3,027,122 visitors (+1.2%) in the first seven months of 2025.

U.S. West visitors spent $6.63 billion in the first seven months of 2026, compared to $6.17 billion (+7.4%) in the first seven months of 2025. The average daily visitor spending in the first seven months of 2026 was $278 per person, higher than the first seven months of 2025 ($243 per person, +14.5%). Lodging, food and beverage, shopping, transportation and entertainment and recreation expenses all increased compared to the first seven months of 2025.

U.S. East: In July 2026, the three largest U.S. East regions in terms of visitor arrivals were the West South Central (58,039 visitors), South Atlantic (53,802 visitors) and East North Central (43,497 visitors). More than half of U.S. East visitors in July 2026 had been to Hawaii before (56.8%), while 43.2 percent were first-time visitors. In terms of lodging, 60.8 percent of U.S. East visitors in July 2026 stayed in hotels, 13.7 percent stayed in rental homes, 12.9 percent stayed in condominiums, 10.2 percent stayed with friends and relatives and 8.5 percent stayed in timeshares.

In the first seven months of 2026, 1,654,102 visitors arrived from the U.S. East, compared to 1,476,561 visitors (+12.0%) in the first seven months of 2025.

U.S. East visitors spent $4.53 billion in the first seven months of 2026, compared to $4.02 billion (+12.9%) in the first seven months of 2025. Daily visitor spending in the first seven months of 2026 of $316 per person increased from the first seven months of 2025 ($282 per person, +11.9%). Visitors spent more on lodging, food and beverage, transportation, entertainment and recreation, and shopping compared to the first seven months of 2025.

Japan: Of the 55,630 visitors in July 2026, 54,801 visitors arrived on international flights and 829 visitors came on domestic flights. Seven out of 10 Japanese visitors in July 2026 were repeat visitors (72.6%), while 27.4 percent were first-time visitors to the islands. In terms of lodging, 78.9 percent of Japanese visitors in July 2026 stayed in hotels, 14.9 percent stayed in condominiums, 7.5 percent stayed in timeshares and 1.5 percent stayed with friends and relatives.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 395,218 visitors from Japan, compared to 374,873 visitors (+5.4%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Visitors from Japan spent $577.4 million in the first seven months of 2026, compared to $551.7 million (+4.7%) in the first seven months of 2025. Daily visitor spending in the first seven months of 2026 ($247 per person) increased slightly compared to the first seven months of 2025 ($246 per person, +0.5%). Visitors spent more on lodging and food and beverage, but less on entertainment and recreation. Their shopping and transportation expenses were similar to the first seven months of 2025.

Canada: Of the 19,782 visitors in July 2026, 11,922 visitors arrived via direct air service from Canada and 7,860 visitors came on domestic flights. More than half of Canadian visitors in July 2026 (54.2%) had been to Hawaii before while 45.8 percent were first-time visitors. In terms of lodging, 57.6 percent of Canadian visitors in July 2026 stayed in hotels, 15.8 percent stayed in condominiums, 13.7 percent stayed in rental homes, 10.0 percent stayed in timeshares and 7.2 percent stayed with friends and relatives.
In the first seven months of 2026, there were 228,866 visitors from Canada, compared to 245,281 visitors (-6.7%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Visitors from Canada spent $607.8 million in the first seven months of 2026, compared to $635.3 million (-4.3%) in the first seven months of 2025. Daily visitor spending in the first seven months of 2026 of $225 per person was lower compared to the first seven months of 2025 ($228 per person, -1.4%). Visitors spent more on food and beverage, transportation and shopping but less on lodging. Their entertainment and recreation expenses were about the same as the first seven months of 2025.

Island Highlights

Oahu: There were 499,197 visitors to Oahu in July 2026 compared to 518,562 visitors (-3.7%) in July 2025. Visitor spending on Oʻahu was $885.3 million in July 2026 compared to $860.9 million (+2.8%) in July 2025. The average daily census on Oahu was 104,091 visitors in July 2026 compared to 118,332 visitors (-12.0%) in July 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 3,387,131 visitors to Oahu, compared to 3,399,477 visitors (-0.4%) in the first seven months of 2025. For the first seven months of 2026, total visitor spending was $6.04 billion, an increase from $5.70 billion (+5.9%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Maui: Two years and 11 months after the wildfires of August 8, 2023, there were 247,857 visitors to Maui in July 2026, compared to 234,805 visitors (+5.6%) in July 2025. Visitor spending rose to $539.9 million in July 2026 from $510.9 million (+5.7%) in July 2025. The average daily census on Maui was 51,223 visitors in July 2026 compared to 57,288 visitors (-10.6%) in July 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 1,618,051 visitors to Maui, compared to 1,503,003 visitors (+7.7%) in the first seven months of 2025. For the first seven months of 2026, total visitor spending was $3.88 billion, compared to $3.49 billion (+11.3%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Kauai: There were 139,974 visitors to Kauai in July 2026 compared to 141,514 visitors (-1.1%) in July 2025. Visitor spending was $284.2 million in July 2026 compared to $281.8 million (+0.9%) in July 2025. The average daily census on Kauai was 28,097 visitors in July 2026 compared to 33,459 visitors (-16.0%) in July 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 873,086 visitors to Kauai, compared to 849,004 visitors (+2.8%) in the first seven months of 2025. For the first seven months of 2026, total visitor spending was $1.76 billion, compared to $1.73 billion (+2.0%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Hawaii Island: There were 161,921 visitors to Hawaii Island in July 2026 compared to 160,836 visitors (+0.7%) in July 2025. Visitor spending of $276.3 million in July 2026 decreased from July 2025 ($284.4 million, -2.9%). The average daily census on Hawaii Island was 32,617 visitors in July 2026 compared to 38,397 visitors (-15.1%) in July 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 1,070,970 visitors to Hawaii Island, compared to 1,045,678 visitors (+2.4%) in the first seven months of 2025. For the first seven months of 2026, total visitor spending was $1.90 billion, compared to $1.87 billion (+1.2%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Flights and Air Seats to Hawaii

Domestic Flights

There were 5,050 nonstop domestic flights with 1,043,799 seats from the continental U.S. in July 2026, compared to 4,516 flights (+11.8%) with 960,045 seats (+8.7%) in July 2025.

U.S. West: For July 2026, 4,680 scheduled flights with 946,970 seats serviced Hawaii from U.S. West.

Air capacity increased from July 2025 (4,183 flights, +11.9% with 871,309 seats, +8.7%). Fewer scheduled seats from Denver, Las Vegas, Long Beach, Sacramento and Seattle, were offset by growth in seats from Anchorage, Los Angeles, Oakland, Ontario California, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and new service from Burbank.

U.S. East: For July 2026, 350 scheduled flights with 93,328 seats operated to Hawaiʻi from U.S. East.

Air capacity increased from July 2025 (308 flights, +13.6% with 83,810 seats, +11.4%). Fewer scheduled seats from Detroit, Houston, New York JFK and discontinued service from Boston were offset by growth in seats from Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C.

International Flights

In July 2026, there were 695 nonstop flights with 189,706 seats to Hawaii from international points of origin including Japan, Canada, Korea, Oceania, Guam, Manila and many other Pacific islands. Air capacity decreased compared to July 2025 (798 flights, -12.9% with 202,056 seats, -6.1%).

Japan: In July 2026, there were 380 scheduled flights with 108,263 seats from Japan.

There were fewer scheduled flights (417, -8.9%) but more seats (105,993, +2.1%) compared to July 2025. Discontinued service from Fukuoka was offset by growth in scheduled seats from Haneda, Nagoya, Narita and Osaka.

Canada: There were 76 scheduled flights with 13,317 seats from Canada in July 2026.

Air capacity declined from July 2025 (85 flights, -10.6% with 14,363 seats, -7.3%), due to reduced service from Calgary and Vancouver.

Oceania:

• Australia: In July 2026, there were 49 scheduled flights with 13,649 seats from Sydney, Australia. Air capacity decreased compared to July 2025, (67 flights, -26.9% with 18,054 seats, -24.4%), due to discontinued service from Melbourne and fewer seats from Sydney.
• New Zealand: In July 2026, there were 17 scheduled flights with 4,675 seats from Auckland, compared to 12 flights (+41.7%) with 3,327 seats (+40.5%) in July 2025.

Other Asia:

• China: There have been no direct flights from China to Hawaii since service ended in early February 2020.
• Korea: There were 67 scheduled flights with 20,958 seats from Seoul in July 2026, compared to 100 flights (-33.0%) with 29,240 seats (-28.3%) in July 2025.
• Taiwan: Direct air service from Taipei to Hawaii ended in April 2020.

Other Markets:

• Guam: There were 28 scheduled flights with 9,800 seats from Guam in July 2026 compared to 31 flights (-9.7%) with 10,850 seats (-9.7%) in July 2025.
• Philippines: There were 24 scheduled flights with 7,318 seats from Manila in July 2026 compared to 24 flights (0.0%) with 7,360 seats (-0.6%) in July 2025.
• Samoa: There were five scheduled flights with 850 seats from Apia in July 2026 compared to four flights (+25.0%) with 664 seats (+28.0%) in July 2025.
• Rarotonga: There were four scheduled flights with 756 seats from the Cook Islands in July 2026, the same as in July 2025.
• Kiribati: There were four scheduled flights with 680 seats from Christmas Island in July 2026 compared to five flights (-20.0%) with 830 seats (-18.1%) in July 2025.
• Marshall Islands: There were 13 scheduled flights with 2,202 seats from Majuro in July 2026 compared to 18 flights (-27.8%) with 2,988 seats (-26.3%) in July 2025.
• Fiji: There were four scheduled flights with 680 seats from Nadi in July 2026 compared to four flights (0.0%) with 664 seats (+2.4%) in July 2025.
• American Samoa: There were 14 scheduled flights with 3,892 seats from Pago Pago in July 2026, the same as in July 2025.
• French Polynesia: There were eight scheduled flights with 2,224 seats from Papeete in July 2026 compared to four flights (+100.0%) with 1,112 seats (+100.0%) in July 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, there were 37,163 transpacific flights with 8,145,155 seats, compared to 34,790 flights (+6.8%) with 7,735,469 seats (+5.3%) in the first seven months of 2025.

Cruise Ship Visitors

July through August are typically slower months for out-of-state cruise ships entering Hawaii. In July 2026, 1,992 visitors came via one out-of-state cruise ship. This ship had a turnaround trip where the group of visitors that came with the ship departed by air service after touring the Hawaiian Islands. The ship then hosted a new group of 2,029 visitors who flew into Hawaii, toured the islands, then most of them remained with the ship to visit the next out-of-state port. There were 9,710 visitors who came by air to board the Hawaii-homeported ship Pride of America.

In July 2025, 2,636 visitors came to the islands aboard two out-of-state cruise ships. There were 2,559 visitors who flew to the state to board turnaround trips. Another 9,988 visitors came by air service to board the Pride of America.

In the first seven months of 2026, 95,896 visitors came to Hawaii via 48 trips aboard out-of-state cruise ships. There were 4,616 visitors who flew to the state to board turnaround trips. Another 69,001 visitors flew to Hawaii and boarded the Pride of America.

In the first seven months of 2025, 84,507 visitors came via 47 trips aboard out-of-state cruise ships. There were 4,352 visitors who flew to Honolulu to board turnaround trips. Another 60,156 visitors flew to Hawaii and boarded the Pride of America.

Statement by DBEDT Director James Kunane Tokioka

Hawaii's tourism in July 2026 recorded increases in total visitor spending and total visitor arrivals compared to the same month last year. Growth in visitor arrivals from U.S. West, U.S. East, Japan and Canada offset fewer visitors from other international markets.

Nearly three years after the Maui wildfires, there were 247,857 visitors to Maui in July 2026, a 5.6 percent increase from July 2025 (234,805 visitors). The July 2026 visitor counts represent an 83.4 percent recovery when compared to pre-wildfire July 2023 with 297,082 visitors. For the first seven months of 2026, there were 1,618,051 visitors on Maui, a 7.7 percent growth compared to year-to-date 2025, but 9.8 percent lower than the same period before the wildfires.

Note: Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Lala reached hurricane strength and caused significant damage in parts of Hawaii Island and affected other islands. Because the storm occurred in August, information on its effects on visitor spending and arrivals will be available after the August data is published in September.
