DSCR honors 9/11 with memorial run

RICHMOND, Va. -

Employees and community members from Defense Supply Center Richmond participated in the installation's annual 9/11 Remembrance 5K Walk/Run Sept. 11, honoring the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The event drew nearly 100 participants, according to DLA Richmond Police Capt. Michael Gallione. The DLA Richmond Police Community Resource Unit works with Morale, Welfare and Recreation to organize the event each year.

The remembrance included the 5K run/walk, custom merchandise provided by MWR and a display at Building 46 showcasing the history of 9/11. DLA Richmond Fire Department Chief Kenneth Cato spoke before the race, providing background on the attacks and emphasizing the importance of remembering the day.

Gallione highlighted the significance of the memorial, stating that it honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11. He noted that more than 4,000 additional people have since died from cancers and respiratory diseases linked to toxic exposure at Ground Zero.

"This memorial also pays tribute to the courage of first responders and ensures that future generations never forget the impact of that day," Gallione said. "It's not just a run, it's a remembrance that unites communities in resilience, reflection and patriotism."
