ATLANTA - State Representative Tangie Herring (D-Macon) was recently selected by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to participate in the 2025 Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute (GLLI) hosted by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia.
"I'm incredibly honored to be nominated by Speaker Jon Burns and to have actively participated in the Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute," said Rep. Herring. "This is a unique chance to deeply explore leadership in government and work with my colleagues on important state issues. I'm sure the insights and skills I gained will directly lead to more effective representation and outcomes for the people of Macon-Bibb and Monroe counties and for all Georgians."
GLLI took place from July 31 - August 3, 2025, and it brought together select freshman legislators nominated by Speaker Burns and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. Throughout the institute, participants engaged in interactive sessions, breakout discussions and peer learning opportunities.
During this program, Rep. Herring worked with faculty, legislative leaders and other participants. The program's curriculum is designed to help legislators develop personal, ethical and political leadership skills, with the goal of enabling them to better fulfill their roles. Discussions covered personal motivations, leadership styles, the ethical use of power and how to create collective action. Participants also analyzed policy issues, gained understanding of how citizens organize and reflected on their vital role in upholding democracy.
"The program's focus on improving leadership and tackling complex policy issues is exactly what I needed to further my commitment to my constituents and to promote initiatives that build a better future for families across Georgia," added Rep. Herring.
Since its inception in 2005, GLLI has trained more than 200 Georgia legislators in essential leadership skills and collaborative governance. The three-and-a-half-day program is designed to help new legislators develop and strengthen their abilities to become more effective leaders and informed decision-makers in the Georgia General Assembly.
Representative Tangie Herring represents the citizens of District 145, which includes portions of Bibb and Monroe counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism and Urban Affairs committees.
