GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The City of Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) is launching its 2026 firefighter recruitment process, offering residents the chance to serve their community and join one of Michigan's most respected and accredited fire departments.
Applications for firefighter positions will open March 1 and close May 30. GRFD will also accept applications for Fire Cadet positions - a four-month paid opportunity - and the Fire Youth Academy, a one-week summer program for teens ages 15-18.
To help interested candidates prepare, the department will host a series of recruitment open houses featuring presentations on the hiring process, interview tips from a deputy chief and the chance to try parts of the physical agility course. These events will take place at East Leonard Elementary School on six dates between now and May, offering valuable insight and hands-on experience for anyone considering a career in fire service.
Fire Chief Brad Brown said joining the Grand Rapids Fire Department means becoming part of a team that offers competitive pay, excellent benefits, clear career advancement opportunities and access to specialty programs - all while serving your community.
"Being a firefighter is more than a job, it's a calling to serve and protect our family, friends and neighbors," he said. "We're looking for individuals who are ready to make a difference, embrace teamwork and take on one of the most rewarding careers out there. If you've ever thought about joining the fire service, now is the time."
