The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will present a studio dance concert by Seattle-based company El Sueño Friday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts main dance studio.
Tickets are $10 and are available at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/uwyo/6984, in person or at (307) 766-6666 at the Performing Arts box office, Monday through Friday noon-6 p.m., and one hour before performances. Seating is limited.
El Sueño -- which means "The Dream" in Spanish -- uses dance to tell powerful stories of culture, ancestry and community. The UW performance will feature a collaborative piece developed with UW students during the company's campus residency designed to encourage reflection, honor lineage and promote healing.
Founded and led by Indigenous Chicana artist, educator and community organizer Alicia Mullikin, El Sueño weaves both ancient and contemporary art practices in classes and choreography and encourages authentic exploration and storytelling through art creation, song, journaling and movement meditation.
Mullikin's dance experience spans both classical styles and Indigenous Danza Azteca, granting her a unique perspective in fostering culturally resonant dance centered on racial literacy and decolonization. Her choreography combines modern dance with Indigenous principles, creating a powerful statement on identity, resilience and the contemporary Indigenous experience.
El Sueño's work has been featured at numerous schools, institutions and studios across the United States. In 2023, Mullikin was one of only 15 national artists honored as an Arts Advocacy Leadership Fellow by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures.
