Movie Night at Lacey Library: Whale Rider (PG-13)
PG-13 ‧ 2002 ‧ Family/Adventure ‧ 1h 41m
Only males are allowed to ascend to chiefdom in a Maori tribe in New Zealand. This ancient custom is upset when the child selected to be the next chief dies at birth. However his twin sister, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes), survives. At age 12, she enlists the help of her grandmother (Vicky Haughton) and the training of her uncle (Grant Roa) to claim her birthright. But to break with convention, she'll have to do the impossible: win over her ultra-traditional grandfather (Rawiri Paratene). Based on the 1987 novel by Witi Ihimaera. Located eight miles northeast of Olympia, Washington, the Nisqually Delta is one of the country's last unspoiled estuaries. Janine Gates, author of Saving the Nisqually Delta, will discuss her book and present a slide show about the historical pressures applied by ports, counties, cities, and corporations to industrialize the Nisqually Delta.
Citizen activism saved the delta from those threats, but today, the Nisqually Delta is still at risk from the cumulative impact of urban and industrial encroachment. Janine will discuss key moments in Washington State environmental history and ongoing issues related to the ecological integrity of the Nisqually Delta.

How Trans Kids are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era - Reading/Q&A with Author Nico Lang
American Teenager, documents the lives of trans kids and their loved ones in seven different states. The author's goal was to speak back to extreme anti-trans rhetoric about youth by showing trans young people as they actually are: powerfully human. Lang has been touring the country for the past 17 months to bring their voices and stories to as many communities as possible. This stop in Olympia is part of that work. Newsletter Roundup
