Ionia, Michigan agent, Denise Arnesen, earned the coveted Elton R. Smith Award as Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan agents from around the state gathered for the organization's 2026 Convention. Arnesen was recognized at the event for a 26-year career brimming with service, compassion, commitment, support, charitable efforts, and a deep commitment to agriculture and her community.
The Elton R. Smith Award pays tribute to former Michigan Farm Bureau President Elton R. Smith, whose impact on his community and the Farm Bureau organization remains a legacy. It honors a Farm Bureau Insurance agent who best exhibits commitment to their job, community, the insurance industry, and the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies.
Arnesen reflected on the meaning of the Elton R. Smith Award after accepting the honor in front of past winners, leadership from Michigan Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Insurance family, friends and peers. "It means so much knowing that this award recognizes character (as well as) the way we serve our company, clients, and our community. As I look around this room, I know how many agents live these values every single day, (so) I'm truly humbled to be standing up here tonight." Arnesen continued "I've always believed that if you're not becoming better every single day, you're doing it wrong. Farm Bureau gives us every opportunity to become better. What a blessing to work for a company that truly supports family, service, and community."
Arnesen took time to thank all of those she credited for making the achievement possible, including the team at her agency, her son Roger whom she noted would be taking over the business after years working and learning beside her, Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan and its leadership, as well as Michigan Farm Bureau and the Michigan Farm Bureau Board. "That membership, that Board, it's really something. The vision and stability they provide guides not just the company, but also our mission of serving Michigan families."
Don Simon, Farm Bureau Insurance CEO, emphasized Arnesen's uniquely well-rounded experience in highlighting the agent's candidacy for the Elton R. Smith Award. "This is an agent who has served her community for more than a quarter century, promoting 4-H in multiple counties as well as the FFA, serving on multiple councils at her church, a certified Catechist teaching multiple age groups, and a great promoter of the equine industry; showing horses at shows and fairs while teaching others the proper way to insure their interest."
"No one leaves this company. It's really hard because it's such a family. I'm going to officially retire my number because it's time for my son to have his turn, but I won't go away … I'll still be here helping along the way," said Arnesen as she reflected on what the future holds for her agency. "I want to thank Farm Bureau for this incredible journey. One that's changed my life, my family's life, and has allowed me to serve the community I love for 26 years."
