Today, 11 July 2025, Hainan University won the Chinese edition of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition. The final round was held in the ICC's Courtroom III in The Hague (the Netherlands). The Shanghai Jiaotong University and Southeast University won, respectively, the second and third places. The award for the Best Speaker went to Liu Xinzhi of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
ICC Judge Keebong Paek was the presiding judge for the competition's jury. Members of the winning team are Lyu Shuxin, Duan Wen, Zou Tingting, Fang Jingyi, Qi Feiyang, Zhang Yixin and Cui Wenbo.
The teams competed on a fictitious case, presenting oral arguments in the roles of the Office of the Prosecutor, the Defence and the Legal Representatives of Victims. The competition was web-streamed live on the Court's website and Facebook account.
The 2025 version of the ICC Moot Court Competition is organised by Leiden University and the Chinese Initiative on International Law. In total, 106 universities participated in the preliminary stage of this year's competition.
ICC Moot Court Competitions are part of the ICC Academic programme, and are organized in English, Spanish, French and Chinese with a view to also support an Arabic version in the future. These initiatives play a critical role in gathering interest in the Court's work with academic communities as well as in enhancing promotion and respect for international criminal law.
