Southern Humboldt residents: Bring us your brush for Defensible Space Days

Southern Humboldt residents: Bring us your brush for Defensible Space Days

Published: Sep 14, 2026

REDWAY - To protect families, property, and communities from wildfire, creating defensible space around homes is one of the most powerful actions one can take. On November 7 and 8, Caltrans District 1, CAL FIRE Humboldt-Del Norte Unit, and the Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council are partnering to make that process easier, and free.

For two days only, southern Humboldt County residents will be able to dispose of woody debris for free during Defensible Space Days. Removing excess vegetation can be time-consuming and costly, and disposal fees or concerns about escaped burn piles can prevent residents from completing important cleanup work. This event provides a safe and convenient option for disposing woody vegetation while creating defensible space around homes.

Each branch, shrub, or pile of brush you remove helps reduce the fuel available for wildfire. When entire neighborhoods take action together, the impact can significantly reduce wildfire risks across our community.

The event is free for all southern Humboldt residents. An address must be provided to participate. Staff will be available to help you unload.

Accepted materials include woody vegetation such as shrubs, brush, limbs, trees, and clean stumps. Materials that cannot be accepted include construction materials, treated lumber or plywood, grass, leaves, trash, soil, or cannabis materials. Participants must ensure loads are fully covered with tarps or cargo nets, remove loose material before driving, avoid overloading vehicles, and properly secure large items to prevent debris from falling onto roadways.
