The University of California Board of Regents today (Tuesday, July 14) appointed Jordan Roiland as the 2027-28 student regent. Roiland will serve from July 1, 2026-June 30, 2027 as student regent-designate. He will gain voting privileges when his one-year term as student regent begins on July 1, 2027. He succeeds current student regent Miguel Craven.

He earned his Master of Science in health and medical sciences from UC Berkeley in 2025. He is currently working towards his M.D. as part of the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program.
With his appointment, Roiland becomes the first M.D. student and only the third UC San Francisco student to serve as student regent in the 52-year history of the position.
Following his undergraduate studies at Stony Brook, Roiland worked for two years in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Associate Program in the Northern Mariana Islands. His work focused on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer prevention. He credits that experience with building his understanding of community health and the need for connectedness between federal and local health departments in disease prevention efforts.
Roiland returned to his formal studies at UC Berkeley, where he served on the Student Advisory Committee to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, advising on student life issues including housing needs, technology services and student professional development programs. While earning his master's degree, Roiland worked as a graduate student instructor at UC Berkeley, teaching Introduction to Biostatistics and Epidemiologic Methods. In addition to his studies, Roiland served as a student ambassador for the University of California Advocacy Network (UCAN) during the 2025-26 academic year.
"I'm proud to have wholly come up through public education. My time at UC Berkeley and UCSF has shown me how strong these institutions are, thanks to our impressive faculty, amazing staff and incredible students," said Roiland. "I am humbled by the honor of representing the student perspective while working with the Board of Regents to support a UC that upholds our institutional vision and values. It is exciting to be the first medical student to serve in this role, and I can't think of a more critical moment to have this perspective brought to the board."
Student leaders reviewed applications and interviewed semifinalists for the student regent position. A special committee of the regents interviewed finalists for the position and nominated Roiland. You may find more information about the Board of Regents' policy on appointing a student regent here.
