U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Kentucky State Director Travis T. Burton today announced three distance learning grants totaling over $2.8 million.
The grants, awarded to Rockcastle, Bell, and Knox counties, will further improve distance learning opportunities for thousands of learners.
"These grants are about more than technology - they're about investing in the future of Rockcastle, Bell, and Knox counties," said Burton. "Thanks to the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Rollins, these investments to support distance learning will help students and teachers access new opportunities that will benefit this region for years to come."
Rockcastle County Board of Education will use a $974,230 grant to equip five hub/end-user sites throughout the county with tele-education mobile carts for interactive real-time connections. Instructors will deliver courses to five locations benefiting 1,939 students.
Bell County Board of Education will use an $870,000 grant to equip seven hub/end user sites throughout the county with advanced distance learning equipment. Instructors at Bell County School districts will deliver advanced coursework, college preparation, career exploration and specialized instruction to students at seven locations benefiting 2,453 students.
Knox County Board of Education will use a $998,265 grant to equip 11 hub/end-user sites throughout the county with interactive panels, sound bars, Chromebooks and telehealth carts for use in distance learning and telehealth. Instructors at Knox County Public Schools will deliver core and enrichment, dual credit and career and technical education courses. Knox County medical providers will provide workshops and programs to support substance abuse awareness, prevention and coping. The project will be delivered to 11 end-user sites benefiting 4,658 students.
During fiscal year 2025, USDA Rural Development awarded over $6.8 million in Kentucky through the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program. This program helps rural communities leverage technology to overcome distance and low population density to access health care and educational opportunities.
