Subramanyam, Kaine Bill to Designate George C. Marshall House as a National Park Service Affiliated Area Passes House Unanimously

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA-10) and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA)'s bill that would designate the General George C. Marshall House in Leesburg, known as Dodona Manor, as an affiliated area under the National Park Service (NPS) passed the House unanimously.

"Dodona Manor has been a cornerstone of our community in Leesburg for several hundred years, and it deserves recognition. This bill honors George C. Marshall's remarkable legacy by ensuring the property is preserved for generations of Virginians and for visitors across the world who come to see it. The bill will also help further the work of the George C. Marshall International Center and all of its programming. I am optimistic this bill will pass the Senate thanks to Senator Kaine's leadership, and I urge the President to sign it," said Subramanyam.

"I'm glad that the House passed my legislation with Representative Subramanyam to designate General George C. Marshall's Dodona Manor as a National Park Service Affiliated Area. This will ensure that the site is preserved for future generations and honor the amazing legacy of General Marshall," said Kaine. "I urge the Senate to pass the bill as soon as possible."

Rep. Subramanyam and Senator Kaine introduced this bill in February 2025. The Senate could pass this bill as soon as this week.

This will significantly raise the profile of Dodona Manor as a "must see" for visitors to Loudoun County and the National Capital Region. The increased visibility and subject matter expertise enabled through the NPS designation will ensure that generations to come will benefit from learning of General Marshall's sterling example and outstanding character. The timeless values of selfless service, unwavering integrity, and visionary leadership are experienced by all visitors to the historic site, and we are exceptionally excited about the future in partnership with the National Park Service," said Tom Greenspon, the former Board Chairman of the George C. Marshall International Center.

The official designation would be the final step in many years of advocacy for recognition of Dodona Manor as a unit of the National Park System. Designation as an NPS affiliated area would provide new resources to preserve and celebrate General Marshall's legacy at the site, including technical assistance to support restoration efforts, accessibility improvements, and new programming.

General Marshall dedicated his life to public service, holding pivotal roles such as Chief of Staff of the Army during America's entry into World War II, Secretary of State where he designed the transformative Marshall Plan to rebuild post-war Europe, and Secretary of Defense during the early stages of the Korean War. In 1941, while serving as Army Chief of Staff, he purchased Dodona Manor, where he lived until his passing in 1959.
