Mesquite City Council adopts 2025-26 budget

On Monday, Aug. 18, the Mesquite City Council approved the City's annual budget for the 2025-26 Fiscal Year.

The budget includes funding for additional firefighters and police officers to maintain staffing needs for the future growth of the community.

The budget also includes an additional $1 million in roadway maintenance funding, continuing the City's efforts to improve roadway conditions on thoroughfares and residential streets and alleys.

Additional budgetary items include funding for the operation of the new Fire Station No. 8 on FM 2757 which will open in December, additional maintenance staff for the City's storm water and utility systems and expanded services for the City's library system.

The proposed tax rate of $0.730000 exceeds the "no-new-revenue" rate of $0.695884, which would have raised the same amount of property tax revenue as last year. The proposed tax rate increase of $0.034116 is needed for additional public safety staffing, funding for roadway maintenance and addressing the increasing costs of City operations.

"This budget addresses the primary concerns of our citizens - safe neighborhoods and improved roadways," said Mayor Daniel Alemán Jr. "It will also provide for competitive pay for our police officers and firefighters and provide additional staffing and program funding for public safety, libraries, parks and recreation and code enforcement to meet the needs of our growing community."

State law requires voter approval of the tax rate increase. If voters approve the proposed rate, the owner of a home with the median taxable value of $238,640 would pay about $145.17 per month - an increase of $6.78 per month compared to the "no new revenue" rate.
