Human Rights Council 60th Session Urgent debate on the armed attack launched by Israel against the State of Qatar on September 9th, 2025

Ministry Statements & Speeches: 16 September 2025

Delivered by Permanent Representative Deborah Geels.

Mr President,

New Zealand is deeply concerned by Israel's strikes in Doha.

Our Foreign Minister has publicly said that Israel's actions violate Qatar's sovereignty, risk escalation, and undermine efforts by Qatar, the US, and Egypt to end the conflict in Gaza.

The strikes take us further away from peace.

We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and full humanitarian access into Gaza.

All parties must abide by their obligations under international law, including the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice.

The violence needs to stop. A permanent end to the fighting must be found.

New Zealand will continue to advocate for the parties to urgently work towards a two-state solution. This is the best path to a durable and lasting peace.

Thank you, Mr President.
