A community-led event in Redwood City will bring families, youth and community members together for a conversation in both Spanish and English about eating disorders, stigma and how to find support.
"Nourishing Wellness: A Community Conversation on Eating Disorders" will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 30, at County Plaza, 501 Winslow St. in Redwood City. The presentation will be conducted in Spanish and English, with interpretation available for both languages.
The event is hosted by San Mateo County Health's Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Health Ambassador Program in partnership with the Office of San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller. The event builds on District 3's Eating Disorder Awareness Week efforts earlier this year and is being shaped by Health Ambassadors, who identified a need for more culturally accessible education and support for Spanish speaking families. The conversation will include education, lived experience and behavioral health expertise to help reduce stigma, encourage early support and connect community members to available resources.
"Eating disorders are often misunderstood, and too many families struggle in silence because of stigma or a lack of culturally accessible information," said Supervisor Ray Mueller. "This event continues the important conversation we started during Eating Disorder Awareness Week and reflects the leadership of community members and Health Ambassadors who saw a need and stepped forward. I'm grateful to partner with Behavioral Health and Recovery Services to help make sure Spanish-speaking families have access to information, support and resources."
The community conversation is part of a broader County Health effort to expand awareness and access to support around eating disorders. Behavioral Health and Recovery Services has 18 clinicians trained in eating disorders who can support residents and families seeking help. The Health Ambassador Program complements those services by training and supporting community members to share behavioral health information, reduce stigma and help connect residents to care in ways that reflect the languages, cultures and needs of their communities.
"Our Health Ambassadors play an essential role in helping County Health hear directly from the community and respond in ways that are culturally relevant and accessible," said Jei Africa, director of Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. "This event is an example of what that partnership looks like in practice: community members identifying a need, County Health helping bring resources together and families having a welcoming space to learn, ask questions and find support."
Community members, families, youth, providers and advocates are encouraged to attend.
