COPPER CENTER, ALASKA - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve will use a helicopter in mid-September to support a stabilization project at the historic Erie Mine Bunkhouse. The helicopter will transport personnel, equipment and materials between McCarthy and the remote historic site. Flight dates will depend on weather and conditions.

National Park Service crews will use equipment delivered to the site to move fallen rock from around the historic structure and prepare for potential additional stabilization work next season. Some materials will be cached at the site for future use.

Visitors and residents in the Kennicott Valley should expect periods of increased helicopter activity and noise between McCarthy and the Erie Mine area while operations are underway. Pilots operating in the area should remain alert for helicopter activity.

The Erie Mine Bunkhouse is part of the historic mining landscape preserved within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Park staff regularly evaluate historic structures and prioritize preservation work based on their condition, significance and available resources.

Visitors should stay clear of active work areas, follow posted signs and closures, and avoid entering abandoned mine openings or closed historic structures. Information about abandoned mine safety and current conditions is available on the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve website.
